Prefab Replacement Grants Approved For More Schools

€15 million is being made available to schools to replace rented prefabs with permanent buildings, minister fir education Ruairi Quinn has announced.

The prefab replacement initiative is part of an ongoing scheme, which is hoped will save €5m a year in rental costs.

In total €42m will be spent, €23.6m of which is already been used.

30 schools have already benefited from the initiative, with 46 more schools being offered money to replace the temporary building in this latest round.

Up To 40 New Schools To Be Established In Six Years
Twenty new primary schools and twenty new post-primary schools are to be established in the next six years. Announcing the new schools, the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn said: "My Department is forecasting an increase of over 45,050 primary pupils and 24,900 post-primary pupils by the start of the 2017/18 school year.

New Schools Construction Begins
The Minister for Education and Skills has welcomed the start of construction today of eight schools which are being delivered under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. These are the first public sector projects to be funded under the PPP model since June 2010.

Preferred Tenderer Selected To Build Five Schools
The Inspired Spaces Consortium has been selected as the preferred tenderer to develop five new schools in Ireland. The schools have been included in Bundle 5 of the Department's Public Private Partnership (PPP) programme. Construction work on the schools is expected to begin in the summer next year.
