Former Hotel Convicted Of Raping Employee

A 47-year-old former hotel owner has been convicted of the rape of an employee following a staff party in July 2010.

Brian Shaughnessy was sentenced to six years in jail, with the last year suspended, for the rape of a young employee of his hotel, the Loughrea Hotel and Spa, in Co Galway.

During his trial in March the court heard that Shaughnessy had been buying the woman drinks after asking her if he could confide in her.

The attack took place in the presidential suite of the hotel, which Shaughnessy owned at the time.

Shaughnessy, of Ballywinna, Craughwell, had pleaded not guilty to rape on 26 July 2010.
