Garda Appeal After Thieves Steal €10,000 From Car Buyers

Gardaí have launched a fresh appeal for information about an armed hold-up in which a couple were robbed of €10,000 as they waited to pay for a car they had agreed to buy.

The couple had been waiting in a car park, where they had agreed to meet the person they thought to be selling a Ford Focus car they had agreed to buy, a deal that had been done over the phone.

As they waited two men in balaclavas armed with knives forced them to hand over the €10,000 in cash they had brought with them.

The incident took place in a car park next to the Grand Canal in Athy, Co Kildare at around 20.05 on Monday, May 13.

The thieves made off on foot in the direction of Lennon's Bridge.

One of the robbers is said to approximately 5ft 8in to 6ft tall, early to mid 20s, and skinny.

The second, 5ft 9in to 6ft tall, pale skinned, and wore a black hoodie and a black scarf covering his face.

Garda hope to speak to anyone who may have seen the suspects in or around the Upper William Street area or as they ran towards Lennon Bridge, or the young couple in their Citroen car.
