Dáil Abortion Debate Underway

A Dáil debate on the Protection of Life during Pregnancy legislation is underway.

If passed the Bill will allow for termination in limited circumstances, including a threat to the life of the mother and when medical consensus is that the expectant mother will take her own life because of the pregnancy.

It is understood that there will be no time constraints placed on the debate of the bill.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny confirmed yesterday that Fine Gael would not allow a free vote on the Bill, with TDs and Senators expected to support the legislation.

However, Fine Gael TD's Peter Mathews Brian Walsh have both indicated that will vote against the Bill.

Sinn Féin is expected to vote collectively, while Fianna Fáil is allowing a free vote.
