Minister Announces Move On Special Needs Education
Labour Senator Mary Moran has welcomed the confirmation that Minister Ruairi Quinn has retained the level of resource teachers for students with special educational needs to the 2012/13 levels.
She said: "In recent times, there has been much concern over allocation of resource teaching posts. Following the announcement last week, I immediately relayed my concerns to Minister Quinn along with the concerns of many worried parents who contacted me. I am delighted he has listened and should be commended for this decision to ensure that children with special educational needs will receive the full allocation of hours they so richly deserve.
"In the face of an unprecedented economic crisis, Minister Ruairi Quinn has been able to retain the level of resource teachers available to students with special educational needs for the last two years when many other areas of education and public service have suffered severe downgrades and cuts. I welcome that the Minister has been able to allocate €1.3bn of the €8bn budget to special education alone.
"I do not accept that this is enough - there can never be enough money or resources when it comes to our children - but we do have to recognise that there is a strong commitment to special education within the Labour Party and this Government. This is evidenced by the announcement today that 500 additional teaching posts which were due to be released in September are to be released to schools now in order to cope with the continuing rise for resources."
