St. John's Church To Be Restored
Fine Gael Meath East TD, Helen McEntee, has welcomed the announcement that almost €200,000 is being provided for the restoration of St. John's Church in Nobber.
The Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan TD, has given sanction for Meath Partnership to approve funding of €196,934 to St Johns Old Cemetery Restoration Group for the restoration of St. John's Church under the conservation and upgrading of the rural heritage measure of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013.
She said: "This is fantastic news for all of those who have worked so hard to get the restoration project underway at St John's Church, and I have no doubt that this announcement will be warmly welcomed by the local community in Nobber.
"The project has a total cost of €262,579, so this funding approved under the Rural Development Programme will go a long way to bringing it to completion. A considerable amount of work has already been carried out on the interior and exterior of the church, but this funding will allow for the overhaul of the church to be completed. This will include the installation of new windows, the restoration of the floors and the inclusion of a new entrance hall.
"A huge amount of work has gone into getting the project to this stage. I would like to pay particular tribute to the Chairperson of the Restoration Group, Andy Reilly, and the outgoing Chair, Richie Clarke, who have dedicated a lot of time and effort into getting the church restored.
"Councillor Eugene Cassidy has also been tireless in his efforts to ensure this project is completed, as have all of the committee. I know my father also worked with the Group in recent times."

A former bishop has been criticised after a report was published into claims of child abuse allegations and the behaviour of priests. The National Board for Safeguarding Children (NBCS) in the Catholic Church has published audits of many dioceses. Dr Joseph Duffy said he regretted the management of some cases.

The State Funeral of former Taoiseach, Dr. Garret FitzGerald is to take place this weekend in Dublin. Dr FitzGerald, 85, passed away in a Dublin hospital after a short illness. He served as Taoiseach twice between 1981 and 1987. On Saturday from 11.00 am until 7.

In a dramatic speech to the Cambridge Group for Irish Studies in the Magdalene College in Cambridge, Diarmuid Martin said that Catholicism in Ireland was being reduced to a tiny minority and becoming "irrelevant in society".

Church Owes €50m To Abused Victims
The Catholic Church owes the Government more than €50 million of the compensation promised to victims of clerical sex abuse. The overall compensation package will cost €1.1 billion, but a deal with the religious orders struck with the state limits their liability to €128m. The rest of this figure was agreed to be paid by the Irish taxpayer.
