Proposed Abortion 'Cooling-Off Period' Rejected
A proposal that suicidal women seeking an abortion should be subject to a "cooling-off" period, has been rejected by Minister for Health James Reilly.
The proposal, put forward by Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin, called for the introduction of cooling-off period of "a week to 10 days".
Minister Reilly however, said that such a move could result in the Oireachtas being responsible for the death of a woman. Adding that he was not prepared to have that on his conscience.
Reilly is reported to have said that while such a concept was appropriate in other areas of the law, with regards to abortion it "is a life and death situation".
