New Chief Of Staff Of The Defence Forces Appointed

The appointment of Major General Conor O'Boyle as the new Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces has been approved by the government.

The current Deputy Chief of Staff Operation will take over from Lieutenant General Sean McCann when he retires on August 12.

Minister for justice Alan Shatter welcomed the news of Major General O’Boyle's appointment, thanking Lieutenant-General McCann for his three years of service in the role.

Maurice Quinn was also appointed to the position of Secretary general of the Department of Defence. A role he will take up on October 02 following the retirement of Michael Howard.

Gormley's Haulbowline Report Due
The Minister for the Environment is to present his preliminary findings on the controversial Haulbowline site in Cobh on Friday. John Gormley will be giving his report to local county and town councillors at 11.30am on Friday morning following an inquiry into toxic waste found at the site.

Award Winning Scientist Appointed To Directorship
The Minister for Research and Innovation has welcomed the appointment a "renowned scientist and innovator" as Director General of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). TD Seán Sherlock said the appointment of Professor Mark Ferguson to the government position was a "tremendous coup".

Defence Forces Recruitment Campaign Launched
A new recruitment campaign has been launched for the Permanent Defence Forces, by Minister for Defence Simon Coveney. The Defence Forces plan to induct just over 600 general service personnel to the Permanent Defence Force in 2016 and a further 850 personnel in 2017.

Bruton Unveils Patronage For Nine New Post-Primary Schools
Education Minister Richard Bruton has revealed which bodies will operate nine new post-primary schools once they are opened in 2017 and 2018. Patronage of the new schools in Limerick City & Environs (East), Malahide & Portmarnock, Firhouse Dublin 24, and Dublin South City Centre is being awarded to Educate Together.
