Report Calls For Referendum On Same-Sex Marriage

A report from the convention on the Constitution has called for a referendum to be held over same-sex marriage.

The report reveals that 79% of convention members were in support of amending the Constitution to provide for same-sex marriage.

It is understood that there is a four-month timeframe for the government to respond to the recommendations made by the report.

78% of convention members showed favour for "directive or mandatory wording" should a referendum be held and an amendment made.

81% also recommended that, in the event of the referendum being carried, legislation should be introduced to address “the parentage, guardianship and upbringing of children” in families headed by same-sex married parents.

The government will now consider its response to the report.
