Concerns Raised Over Gas Meter Tampering

Concerns have been raised over a suspected scam, which involves tampering with gas meters, could put some 200 homes in Dublin at risk.

Garda have said that up to 200 gas meters may have been targeted in the scam.

It follows the discovery this week by Bord Gáis of 11 properties in Dublin where the gas meter had been tampered with, alongside criminal damage of the meters.

A man in his 30s was arrested following a search at a house in Kilmainham where the meter was found to have been tampered with. He was released the following day, while a file is prepared for the DPP.

Bord Gáis have said: "We have seen an increase in the prevalence of gas meter tampering throughout the country through an increase in detection of meter tampering and increasing numbers of tip-offs from members of the public,” he said.

"Tampering with a gas meter is not only illegal but also presents a serious public safety concern.

"I urge anyone who suspects that their gas meter has been tampered with to contact us on 1850 200 694 or on www.bordgaisnetworks.ie/metertampering."
