Over €26 Million Paid Out In Compensation To Gardai
More than €26.5 million of taxpayers money has been paid out in compensation to gardai injured while on duty in the last three years.
Under the Garda Compensation Act the amount paid out has risen to €7.1 million last year, up from €5.3m in 2010.
Meanwhile the actual number of claims has decreased, falling from 175 in 2010 to 120 in 2012, new figures have revealed.
The Public Accounts Committee, the Dáil's spending watchdog, received the figures in a letter sent last month by Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan.

Businessman Sentenced To Five Years For Raping Prostitute
A Waterford Businessman has been sentenced to five years after being convicted of raping a prostitute in a luxury hotel. Billy Keogh, 46, who is married with six children was found guilty in Feburary of raping the 26 year-old Croatian woman who was working as a prostitute at the time.

Settlement Reached In Dr Shine Abuse Case
More than 100 former patients of disgraced hospital consultant Michael Shine have reached a multi-million euro settlement with the religious order that ran the hospital he worked in, the Irish Independent has reported. The former patients claimed the struck-off medic sexually abused them while he worked at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

Drop In Priests' Pay
Priests in Dublin have seen their pay drop by 9%. Donations in the Dublin diocese have fallen by 16% in the past three years. The dip in funding is due to falling collections and soaring expenses. In addition there is the cost of extra childcare-protection and clerical-abuse compensation claims.

Huge Rise In Personal Injuries Claims
Over €180m was paid out in 2007 for personal injuries claims - a huge rise on the previous figures. In fact, the total amount of money paid out for compensation awards last year rose by 56%. Figures from the Personal Injuries Assessment Board show that it made 8,200 payments totalling €181m.
