Teen Admits False Rape Allegations Against Uncle
It has emerged that a girl who accused her uncle of raping her, lied under coercion from her mother.
According to RTÉ the girl, now 18, has admitted that the allegation she made some eight years ago was false and that her mother had made her file the complaint against her uncle.
The uncle, a 41-year-old man who cannot be named for legal reasons, had pleaded guilty at the opening of his trial, despite maintaining his innocence until then.
He has now been allowed to change his plea following the girls' admission.
It is understood that the man decided to plead guilty on the day as he believed it was his best chance of avoiding jail.
It has now emerged that in April, the man's older sister, and the supposed victims mother, told gardaí that she had made her daughter write to gardaí and make the allegations against her brother.
She added that her daughter had not wanted to do it, saying that: "It took a lot of time to get her to understand."
It is understood that the accused man, described as having a "mild intellectual disability", drank heavily at the time of the accusation and could lose days of his memory.
He pleaded guilty in the hope of receiving a suspended sentence.
Following the new information he has been allowed to change his plea, has been removed from the sex offenders register and been excused from attending the next hearing of the case.
