Govt Press On With Sunbed Legislation
The government is to press ahead with legislation regulating the use of sunbeds in an effort to protect people from skin cancer.
Fine Gael TD for Donegal, Joe McHugh was speaking following confirmation by the Minister for Health, James Reilly TD, that drafting of the Public Health (Sunbeds) Bill will be completed within the next six to eight weeks.
McHugh said: "The International Agency for Research on Cancer places sunbeds in the highest cancer risk category. Ireland must regulate for the usage of sunbeds, so that people under the age of 18, or those with fair skin who choose to use sunbeds, do so with the appropriate guidance.
"Minister Reilly has confirmed that the drafting of the Public Health (Sunbeds) Bill will be completed within the next six to eight weeks. The legislation has been accorded priority drafting status and, once completed, will be notified to the EU Commission under the EU Transparency Directive.
"We must lead the way in tackling the causes of cancer in this country."
