Irish Troops To Be Deployed To Syria

A contingent from Ireland's Defence Force is to be deployed to serve with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in Syria has been approved by the government.

The deployment, requested by the UN, will next need approval from the Dáil.

If granted troops will then be sent to the Golan Heights buffer zone between Syria and Israel.

It is understood that an escalation in violence between rebels and forces loyal to Syria's president, lead to Austria pulling out its troops out.

Deployment Of Troops Delayed
The United Nations have asked Ireland to delay deployment of Defence Forces troops into Syria. The troops had been due to leave for the country today, however, it is believed that a last minute intervention by the UN in New York has resulted in the delay.

The Health Minister Leo Varadkar has signed an ED Congestion Escalation Directive to make sure progress made on tackling overcrowding in ER departments is "sustained and deepened". Special Gardai Units Armed With Tasers
New Gardaí units will be armed with the latest Taser electro-shock weapons following new government approval. The newly deployed Regional Support Units (RSU) will be the first uniformed Garda officers to carry the controversial weapons which use high voltage barbs to non-lethally stun suspects.
