Coroner Calls For Official Record Of Suicide Verdicts
Inquest verdicts of suicide should be officially recorded to help gather real statistics, the coroner for west Limerick has said.
Currently, a coroner can only recommend a verdict of death in accordance with the medial evidence as given by a pathologist, west Limerick coroner and Senior Counsel Brendan Nix added.
As coroner for west Limerick, Mr Nix covers Newcastlewest, Abbeyfeale, Kilmallock and Croom. He claims that in rural areas across Limerick the suicide rate is higher, sometimes double, that of Limerick city.
According to RTÉ, figures from the CSO show that in 2012, 507 people died by suicide, with 15 in Limerick city and 16 in Co Limerick. This compares to 11 deaths by suicide in Limerick city in 2011 and 22 in Limerick county.
