Heavy Security Presence At Funeral Of Suspected Omagh Bomber

A heavy gardaí presence flanked the funeral of suspected Omagh bomber Seamus McKenna this morning in Ravensdale, near Dundalk, Co Louth.

A number of checkpoints were in operation a kilometre out from Ravensdale, with cars being searched before being allowed to proceed to St Mary's Church.

Mourners attending the funeral were also questioned by gardaí, who took a record of personal details and verified peoples IDs.

The funeral was monitored from the air by a gardaí helicopter, while the garda dog unit and the public order unit were on stand-by.

The increased security followed an announcement last week by Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan, who said earlier this week that no paramilitary trappings would be permitted at any funerals.
