Warning Issued Worsening Condition Of Roads

There is no budget to carry out essential maintenance work on road this year due to spending cuts, the National Roads Authority (NRA) has said.

Concerns have been raised that the NRA's inability to maintain the roads could leave motorists driving on uneven and poorly marked roads.

It is understood that the NRA budget of €300m for this year, is half of what they were allocated in 2012.

NRA chief executive Fred Barry warned the Dáil transport committee of the effect this would have on the nations roads over the coming years.

The Road Safety Authority says that dangerous roads or road conditions account for about 3pc of all fatal accidents.
