Co Kildare Garda Launch Murder Investigation
Gardaí in Co Kildare have launched a murder investigation after a man, who had been the victim of an assault, died in hospital.
The 56-year-old victim was found in a laneway at St John's Lane and Greenhills, Athy, Co Kildare, just before midnight on Thursday.
He died at around 5am in Naas General Hospital. He had suffered a wound to the head.
Gardaí have said the victim was well-known to them as a dissident Republican, who had served time for arms and bomb seizures.
Detectives at Athy are appealing for anyone with information or witnesses to contact them.

Gardaí have appealed for help in tracing 33-year-old Michael Anesu Nhema, who has been missing from his Co Kildare home last Tuesday. The Zimbabwe-native was last seen at about 9am on Tuesday 14 April at Branswood in Athy. He is believed to be driving a black Audi A4 with a partial registration of 131 D.

Cocaine And Cannabis Seized In Co Kildare
Cocaine and cannabis herb worth an estimated €34,000 has been seized in Moone, Co Kildare. As part of a planned search of a premises at Lower Belan, garda uncovered €14,000 worth of cocaine and €20,000 worth of cannabis, shortly before midnight on Sunday, 12 June.

A 43-year-old man has been charged in connection with a €700,000 drugs seizure in Co Kildare. A number of cannabis plants and herb were discovered on Monday night following a planned search of premises in Athy. The man, who was arrested in Athy on Tuesday, is to appear before Naas District Court on Wednesday.

Two Die In Cork House Fire
Two people have died in an house fire in Co Cork early this morning. The blaze broke out at about 5.15am in East Ferry, Midleton. It is believed the victims were an elderly brother and sister. A Garda spokesman said investigations are being carried out to establish the cause of the fire but is not believed to be suspicious.
