20,000 Smuggled Cigarettes Uncovered By X-Ray

A car arriving into Rosslare Europort was discovered to be carrying some 20,000 smuggled cigarettes.

Revenue Customers Service investigated the car after spotting a suspicious object on an x-ray image of the Renault car, which had arrived from France.

A search of the vehicle uncovered 'Minsk Mini-Slims' with a retail value of €9,661, which represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of around €8,200.

A 30-year-old Lithuanian man was detained for questioning.

Elephant Runs Amok In Cork Shopping Centre Car Park
Fresh calls for legislation to ban live animals from performing in circuses have been made after an elephant ran loose in a Cork city car park yesterday. The Indian elephant stunned shoppers at Blackpool shopping centre when it broke free from the Courtney Bros circus camped nearby.

New Cars Sales 'Brake By A Third'
Government statistics have revealed that the number of new cars licensed in November fell by 34.9% when compared to last year. The Central Statistics Office said there were 1,398 new private cars licensed in November 2011, compared with 2,146 in November 2010.

Pensioner And Child Killed On Irish Roads
A senior citizen and a young child have died in separate road accidents on either side off the border. A 65-year-old man was fatally injured after a three-vehicle road crash on the Newry Road in Kilkeel on Tuesday afternoon. Two other people have been taken to hospital for injuries which are not thought to be life threatening.
