HMRC Begin Collecting Property Tax 'At Source'

The Revenue Commissioners has revealed that a "significant number" of homeowners have refused to register for the new property, prompting instructions for direct deduction being sent to the employers of pension providers for thousands of people.

In July some 50,000 warning letters were issued, 46,000 last Wednesday and Thursday alone.

With the deadline for registering for payment passing on Thursday a revenue spokesperson said: "Deduction at source has already commenced in relation to letters sent in earlier batches and people are already seeing this in their payslips."

"Those who received the letter last week will have seven working days to file their return on-line. If they are not the liable person (the property owner), they can contact Revenue with details of the owner to prevent Revenue issuing instructions to their employer or pension provider to deduct the local property tax estimate from their wages or occupational pension."
