Seanad Recalled To Discuss Organ Donation Law
A European Union regulation on organ donation, signed into Irish law last August without debate, is to be discussed by the Seanad.
The Seanad has been recalled from summer recess to discuss the law after Fianna Fáil Senator Mark Daly collected 20 signatures from fellow members of the Upper House to trigger a recall.
Fianna Fáil leader of the Seanad, Senator Darragh O'Brien, claims that health minister James Reilly signed the directive into law without any consultation or scrutiny by the Dáil or Seanad, adding that government continued to ignore a major recommendation in the EU directive to establish a single national transplant authority.
The recall of the Seanad however, was criticised as a "political stunt" by Fine Gael's Seanad leader Senator Maurice Cummins, who said that Fianna Fáil had 110 sitting days to seek an adjournment debate. More recently, they said there were eight opportunities to raise the issue in Private Members' Time and Fianna Fáil did not avail of those opportunities.
