MEPs Call For Dublin Bridge Name
Dublin MEP, Emer Costello, has repeated her call for the new Dublin city bridge to be named after trade union activist, Rosie Hackett.
Ms Costello said: "As the potential names for our new bridge are whittled down to the final five, I am urging Dublin City Council to choose Rosie Hackett. I am also calling on all Dubliners to show their support for Rosie by adding their voices to the active Rosie Hackett Bridge Facebook campaign.
"Rosie Hackett was a trade unionist, a 1916 veteran, and fought successfully for improved working conditions for thousands of Dubliners. As a former Dublin Lord Mayor, I am proud of the contribution Rosie made to our city, and I believe we must rightly ensure her place in history.
"Employed in Jacobs Factory, Rosie galavanised over 3,000 female workers to protest in solidarity with their male colleagues over appalling working conditions. Rosie's courageous efforts – at just 18 years of age, resulted in the women getting better terms and pay. Rosie also founded the Irish Women Worker Union and played a key role in the 1913 Lockout and in the 1916 Rising.
"Too often our history has whitewashed the contributions made by women. In the year that marks the 100 year anniversary of the 1913 Lockout, and in a city where there are no bridges names after any woman, the time has clearly come for the Rosie Hackett Bridge."
