Birth Rate Falls In First Quarter Of 2013
A 9% decrease in the number of births registered has been recorded for the first quarter of 2013, in comparison to the same period in 2012.
New figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show 17,563 births were registered in the period, averaging an annual birth rate of 15.3 per 1,000 of the population.
The figures also show the highest birth rate was recorded in Fingal at 19.6 per 1,000, while the lowest was recorded in Donegal at 11.4 per 1,000.
For the same time period, 8,347 deaths were registered, representing a 4.6% increase.
Comparing the birth and death rate, a natural increase in population of 9,216 was recorded.

There were 75,587 births in Ireland in 2008, according to the ESRI's Perinatal Statistics Report.

Ireland has the highest birth rate of any of the 27 EU countries, according to a report by the ESRI. The perinatal statistics show that 75,600 births were notified to the NPRS in 2010, compared to 58,261 births on 2001. Almost 28% of women giving birth were aged 35 years or older, up from 22% for this age group in 2001.

Highest Number Of Births Recorded In 2009
There were 75,554 children born in Ireland during 2009, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). This was the highest number of births recorded since 1891 when there were 76,877 children born in the 26 counties. The number of births in 2009 marked the fourth consecutive year of annual increases.

At 16.2 per 1,000 population, Ireland again reported the highest birth rate of any of the 27 EU countries. The second highest EU birth rate was reported for the UK at 12.9 per 1,000 population. Mother And Daughter Hurt In Zoo Attack
A mother and her two-year-old daughter have been attacked by a tapir at Dublin Zoo. The attacked happened during a supervised, close-quarters visit, that the mother and daughter had been allowed to take. The two-year-old was attacked but both the animal and the girl's mother was injured when she tried to help her child.
