Funeral Of Poet Seamus Heaney Held In Donnybrook

The funeral of poet Seamus Heaney has taken place at Sacred heart Church in Donnybrook.

President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Brian Friel joined his widow Marie and children Michael, Christopher and Catherine Ann for the funeral mass of the writer, who died unexpectedly in a Dublin hospital on Friday. He was 74.

One of Mr Heaney's own poems, the Given Note, was read at the end of the service.

The acclaimed poet will be buried later today in his native Bellaghy in Co Derry.

Heaney Makes It An Irish Awards Double
The Co Derry poet and Nobel Laureate, Seamus Heaney has received a major literary accolade, the David Cohen prize for literature. It was also two in a row as the last winner was also Irish, the poet Derek Mahon. The David Cohen Prize for Literature, worth £40,000, is awarded every two years.

Irish Poet Wins International Prize
Irish poet Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin has won the Griffin Poetry Prize for her collection, The Sun-fish. Ní Chuilleanáin, born in Cork city in 1942, is a fellow and professor of English at Trinity College Dublin, and a member of Aosdána.
