Report Critical Of Beaumont Hospital Hygiene Standards

The hygiene standards of Dublin's Beaumont Hospital have been severely criticised following an unannounced inspection by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA).

The inspection was carried out on Tuesday 23 July and the HIQA say that what they found represented a potentially serious risk to patient health and welfare.

The report said that while areas of the hospital were clean, several areas were found that required attention in regards to "inappropriate storage and non-compliance with waste management standards."

It also highlighted failings in the standards of hand hygiene.

The report concluded: "Beaumont Hospital must now develop a quality improvement plan (QIP) that prioritises the improvements necessary to fully comply with the National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections.

"This QIP must be approved by the service provider's identified individual who has overall executive accountability, responsibility and authority for the delivery of high quality, safe and reliable services.

"The QIP must be published by the Hospital on its website within six weeks of the date of publication of this report."

In a statement, Beaumont Hospital said the findings of the report "are not acceptable and the hospital is committed to improving its compliance with the relevant standards."
