Audit Of Gardaí Stations Finds Fourth Case Of Missing Money
Sums of money have gone missing from four different Gardaí stations this year, an audit of how the stations handle money as evidence has found.
The audit was ordered following a case in March when a shop owner went to a gardaí station to recover money that had been stolen from his business.
It was discovered then that some €9,000 was missing from the evidence bag, which was supposed to contain €26,000 and had been held in a strongroom at Balbriggan station in north county Dublin.
As that loss was being investigated it was uncovered that a further €4,000 was missing from the station gardaí station.
This was followed in June with the discovery that over €27,000 had disappeared from another gardaí station strongroom. It remains unknown if this money was stolen of mislaid.
The audit, ordered by Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan following these three revelations, subsequently found a fourth case of around €4,000 missing from the Athy garda station in Co Kildare.
The National Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now investigation all four incidents to establish if the monies have been stolen, mislaid or lost.
