Burton Rules Out Budget Benefit Cap

A cap on universal welfare benefits will not be included in next months Budget, Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has indicated.

Confirming that the cap had been discussed, Ms Burton said that no proposal was being considered.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Ms Burton said any such cap would risk discriminating against families caring for disabled relatives.

She said: "I am perfectly happy to look at ideas. But in this particular case I would warn that people should be extremely cautious because they may end get results that they never intended, and they may end up seriously discriminating against families with children or adults with a disability who are also carers."
