Committee Recommend 'Opt-Out' Organ Donation System
The government should introduce an 'opt-out' system for organ donation, the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children has recommended.
The recommendation would mean citizens consent for organ donation would be presumed unless they have chosen to opt-out.
It follows a public consultation carried out on the issue last April, which included contributions from the Irish Kidney Association, the Irish Heart and Lung Transplant Association and the National Organ Procurement Service.
While consent would be presumed, the recommendation included permission for relatives to refuse donation in the event of a family member's death.
The committee were unanimous in making the recommendation, which is hoped would increase the number of organs available for transplant.
