1,600 Leaving Cert Upgrades Awarded
Over 1,600 Leaving Certificate grades achieved this year were upgraded upon appeal, according to information revealed by the State Examinations Commission today.
The news comes as Irish Leaving Cert. students await the news of their appeals, which will be updated at midday.
Some 370,491 grades were issued to 55,572 candidates this year. 8,192 candidates made applications for appeals against 9,100 grades, leading to 1,637 upgrades or 0.46% of all grades awarded. Three results were downgraded.
The highest percentage of upgrades was achieved in Classical Studies, which saw 10 of 487 (2.1%) upgraded.
The biggest amount of upgrades was in Biology, which saw 271 of 22,506 (1.2%) upgraded.
Candidates were given the opportunity to view scripts in their schools in early September before making a decision as to whether or not they wished to appeal the results of one or more subjects.
During the process of appeals, the work is fully re-marked using the original marking scheme. The re-marking is performed by a different examiner to the one who originally marked the work.
Candidates dissatisfied with the outcome of the appeal have recourse to the Independent Appeals Scrutineers, which ensures due process has been followed in the case of each appeal and that all of the appeal procedures were properly carried out.
Candidates will receive the results of their appeals today either through their school or through the on-line examination results service on www.examinations.ie
