Gromanston College Consider Free School Move

Gromanston College, one of the country's best known schools, is to consider ending its fee-paying status to become a free school.

According to a report by the Irish Independent, news that the school was considering the plan was revealed as the Department of Education announced that 13 of the country's 55 private schools were considering dropping their tuition fees.

It ends speculation that Gormanston College was considering the move in light of recent financial difficulties following a fall in the number of enrolments, down to 256 in 2012/13 from 477 in 2008/09.

So-called free schools do not charge tuition fees but can charge for additional services such as accommodation and food for boarders, and meals and extra-curricular activities for day pupils.

They also qualify for state building grants, while fee-paying schools cover their own building costs.
