Local Councils Set For Major Reform Under New Bill
The newly published Local Government Bill 2013 will see the abolition of some 80 town councils, in what has been described as "the most radical reform of the sector in more than a century".
Under the reforms, there will be a 40% reduction in the number of Councillors, bringing the number down to 950 from the current 1,627.
Three new councils will be formed from the merger of six city and county councils in Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford.
However, some have raised concerns over the new bill, with the Municipal Authorities in Ireland, which represents town councils, now seeking legal advice about the bill.
It is also unknown how much the reforms may cost in gratuities for Councillors who will no longer serve.
