Co Offaly Iron Works To Cut 32 Jobs

32 jobs at a Co Offaly iron foundry are to be cut under restructuring proposals.

Workers at EJ, the former Cavanagh Foundry in Birr, were told by management that loss-making activities was to blame for the proposal to reduce staff numbers from 50 to 32.

The management also announced that the company was no longer "financially viable" and that manufacturing of iron castings would be moved to France.

It is understood that some workers dealing with sales, marketing, distribution and steel fabrication will be retained.

A consultation process is now underway between management and staff.
