Govt Urged To Tackle Sex Trafficking Legislation

Amid speculation that a young girl discovered in a state of distress in Dublin city centre last week could be a victim of sex trafficking, the government has been urged to introduction new legislation to tackle prostitution.

The girl, understood to be foreign national and aged between 14 and 16, is currently in the care of the State after being found near the GPO last week in a "distressed state".

It is not yet known the circumstances of how the girl ended up in Dublin, but the Immigrant Council of Ireland have called on the government to make sure that young people were not being trafficked for prostitution in Ireland.

The Immigrant Council is one of 68 organisations involved in the "Turn Off the Red Light" Campaign against prostitution and sex trafficking.

The council said that the current legislation is "not fit for purpose" and needs to be changed.
