Gardaí Tackle Man With Meat Cleaver In Dundalk

A 23-year-old man has been arrested in Dundalk after threatening gardaí with a meat cleaver.

Two officers waiting in a gardaí van first spotted the man as he got into an altercation with another pedestrian in the town. Parking the van, the officers noticed that the man had white socks on his hands and was carrying a 6x4in blade meat cleaver.

Telling the man to drop the knife, he ran and gardaí gave chase, before the man stopped and faced the officers raising the cleaver. The officers were able to get close enough to pepper spray the man and disarm him.

The incident took place in the city centre at around 3.30pm.

Arresting the man, the officers discovered that he was suspected of attempted to rob a shop a short time before the officers first spotted him.

According to Gardaí, the officers took the man to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital because they feared he had taken a large amount of drink and possibly drugs.

Once released from hospital he was interviewed and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
