Sentencing Due Against Wicklow Council Over Firemen Deaths
Sentencing is due today against Wicklow County Council for criminal health and safety violations over the death of two firefighters in Bray in 2007.
Firefighters Brian Murray (46) and Mark O’Shaughnessy (26) died on September 26, 2007, while fighting a blaze in a disused ink factory at Adelaide Villas.
The council pleaded guilty to the three of the charges against it on the ninth day of its trial, which began in July.
It is thought that the council could face up to €3 million in fines.

A 31-year-old Irishman, extradited to Australia earlier this month, has pleaded guilty to the deaths of two Irish people, who died in a car crash almost six years ago. Eamonn Driver, of Slane, Co Meath, was accused in connection with the deaths of Colm Reilly (20) and Kiara Duncan (22) in October 2007.

TDs and Senators will today question the Health Service Executive chief executive, Professor Brendan Drumm. The meeting is taking place as the controversy over the misdiagnosis of breast cancer at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise continues. The annual briefing session is being chaired by the Ceann Comhairle and is being held in private.

Donegal Council Warns People Against Dumping For Bonfires
Donegal County Council have appealed to the public not to dump waste material at bonfire sites, after they removed some three tonnes of waste from just one site. It is understood that waste is being both dumped and gathered for Halloween bonfires.

Official statistics just revealed today show that in mid 2007, the number of people living in the North had increased by 1.0% over the previous year.
