Same-Sex Marriage Referendum For 2015

A referendum on same-sex marriage is to be held in 2015, following an agreement by the Cabinet to push for the vote.

The announcement follows statements by Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore, who today announced he would like to see the referendum within the lifetime of the government.

It is thought the referendum will be held mid-2015.

He said the right of gay people to marry was an "important issue".

The discussions followed a recommendation by the Convention on the Constitution on extending marriage to same-sex couples.

Taosieach Enda Kenny has so far not commented on the issue of same-sex marriage, and has avoided answering questions on the subject.
