Govt Pledges €1m Aid To Philippines
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore TD, has announced €1m in emergency funding towards the relief effort in the Philippines.
On Friday, Typhoon Haiyan swept through the Philippines and has been described as one of the most powerful storms on record to make landfall. It brought sustained winds of 147mph, with gusts of 170mph and waves as high as 45ft. There was also reports of almost 16 inches of rain in areas.
Officials in the country say as many as 10,000 people could have died from the storm, with a further half a million displaced from their homes and villages.
Pledging the relief funds, Minister Gilmore said the aid would go towards shelter, food, water and health. Tents, blankets and other basic necessities, will be made available by Irish Aid and distributed in the Philippines through NGO Plan Ireland, while Ireland's Rapid Response Corps is also on standby to provide expert help to UN agencies operating on the ground.
In a statement, the Tánaiste said: "Ireland has strong bonds with the Filipino people through our missionaries and through the many Filipinos working in our hospitals and elsewhere in Ireland. My thoughts are with the families of those who have perished, and indeed with those waiting to hear of news from their loved ones. This funding and the emergency supplies will go towards those most at risk, as the crisis moves to the recovery stage."

Ireland granted Apple "undue tax benefits of up to €13 billion", according to a new ruling by the European Commission (EC). The EC launched an in-depth state aid investigation in June 2014, which has now ruled that two tax rulings issued by Ireland to Apple substantially and artificially lowered the tax paid by Apple in Ireland since 1991.
