Halawa Sisters To Be Released
Three sisters from Dublin, who have been detained in Edypt since August, are expected to be released later today.
The three siblings of the Halawa family were arrested during a protest march in Cairo during the summer. Their brother, Ibrahim, 17, remains in custody and is expected to attend a court hearing on Saturday.
The siblings had been detained without specific charges since their arrest.
They had been trapped in the al-Fateh mosque after they took part in a protest which related to the ousting of former Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi.
Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore has welcomed the news of the sisters' release.
He said: "I telephoned Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy on Monday last to express my concern that the Halawa siblings had been kept in prison for almost three months without being charged with an offence.
"I also expressed the Government's hope and expectation that the situation would be brought to a satisfactory conclusion in the near future.
"I have been informed that Ibrahim Halawa will attend a further hearing in Egypt on Saturday. My Department will continue to provide consular assistance to him and liaise with the Egyptian authorities on his ongoing detention without charge."
