ESB Workers Vote In Favour Of Industrial Action

ESB bank workers have voted in favour of taking industrial action in a dispute over a deficit in the company's pension scheme.

During the summer the company paid a dividend of €78 million to the State, despite the company's pension deficit of €1.6 billion remaining.

It is understood that the company will also pay the Exchequer a special dividend of €400 million following the sale of assets.

Of those balloted over industrial action, 87.5% voted in favour. The ballot received a turnout of 81%.

Four employees have also taken legal action against the company over the issue.

The ESB said that unions have been invited to talks but have yet to formally respond.
