€32m Shortfall In Budget Needed For Gardaí Wages

A €32 million 'black hole' has been identified in the budget needed for garda wages and to pay compensation to survivors of the Magdalene laundries.

According to a report by the Irish Independent, while Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Alan Shatter, has found some €24 million in an effort to balance books, a budget shortfall of some €32m is still to be found.

€51 million is needed to pay garda wages, with a further €5 million needed to compensate Magdalene Laundries survivors.

It is understood that the €24m Shatter has secured so far is made up of money from other departments – €17m from justice and equality, €5m from prisons, and a combined €1.5m from the courts service and property registration authority.
