Brother Of Sinn Féin President Jailed For Raping Daughter

Liam Adams, the brother of Sinn Féin president and Louth TD Gerry Adams, has been jailed for 16 years for raping and abusing his daughter, Aine.

In October, 58-year-old Adams was convicted of 10 charges, including rape and gross indecency.

The judge described the abuse suffered by Aine Adams, who waived her right to anonymity, as the "greatest imaginable breach of trust".

The abuse took place over a six-year period between 1977 and 1983 when Aine was aged between four and nine.

Despite denying the charges throughout the trial, Adams was convicted by a jury after four hours of deliberations by a majority of 11 to one.

Due to sentencing guidelines that applied at the time of Liam Adams offences he is eligible for automatic 50% remission.
