Govt Urged To Apply For Funding Following Flood Damage

Ireland South MEP, Phil Prendergast, is encouraging the Government to apply for the European Union Solitary Fund (EUSF), which helps to assist with the cost of significant natural disasters.

Speaking from Brussels, Ms Prendergast said: "Now Storm Christine has passed many households and businesses are counting the cost of the devastating damage. The EUSF has an annual budget of €500 million and after the floods of 2009 Ireland was granted €13 million from this fund.

"It is important that my Government colleagues act fast as an application has to be received by the European Commission within 10 weeks of the initial damage caused by the floods.

"I welcome that the Office of Public Works is to make to €45 million available for flood relief, but I believe the cost of this storm may exceed the floods of November 2009 which caused €244 million worth of damage.

"In many parts of my constituency in Cork, Waterford, and Kerry, the clean-up begins today and any funding will provide a huge boost to these counties."
