Department Of Education To Reform Junior Cert
The Junior Cert qualification is to be replaced with a new Junior Cycle Student Award, the Department of Education has announced.
The new award will be phased in from September 2015.
A new working group has also been established to address concerns raised over the revision of the junior qualification.
Convened by the department, the group will involve school managers and union representatives.

Five Junior Minister Posts To Be Scrapped
It has emerged that five junior minister posts are to be scrapped by Brian Cowen later this month. According to reports today, Mr Cowen held a half-hour meeting with all 20 junior Ministers on Monday morning where he asked all the junior ministers to resign on April 21st.

ASTI Announce Escalation Of Industrial Action
The Association of Secondary Teachers Of Ireland (ASTI) has announced that it plans to escalate industrial action if Junior Cycle dispute not resolved. ASTI said that it was planning a series of strike days to take place from this autumn if the dispute is not resolved.

Teachers Follow Through On Strike Action
Up to 30,000 teachers are today taking strike action in an ongoing dispute over changes to the Junior Cycle. The teachers are opposed to proposed changes that would see them responsible for assessing 40% of a students final Junior Certificate. They claim the move would damage the relationship between teachers and students.

Ikea Recalls Children's Beds
Ikea is recalling a Kritter or Sniglar junior bed and asking customers to immediately check the date stamp on the label attached to either the headboard or the underside of the bed. Ikea has received seven reports of breakage of the metal rod connecting the guardrail to the bed frame.

'No Obligation' To Reduce Cert Subjects
The Education Minister has taken a step back from his plans to reduce the amount of subjects taken during the Junior certificate examination after being heavily criticised. Minister Ruari Quinn had proposed that the amount of subjects taken during the exam should be reduced to eight following poor result rankings of students last year.
