Varadker Says Road Safety Is Increasing

Cutbacks in Gardaí Traffic Corps have not had a direct impact on the increased number of road deaths, the Minister for Transport has said.

Leo Varadker told RTÉ radio that road safety was on the increase this year and hoped to see more enforcement on the roads, while also appreciating the difficult job traffic officers had to do.

Figures reveal that some 190 people were killed on roads in Ireland last year, an increase of 17% on the previous.

The minister also revealed that new 'N plates' would be introduced for novice drivers, which would see those with seven penalty points within the first two years of driving taken off the road.
