Construction Of New Cork Jail To Begin

The construction of a new €35 million jail in Cork is to begin on Monday, expected to replace the current prison by the end of 2015.

The new jail however has been criticised for being built to hold two prisoners in each cell, but Justice Minister Alan Shatter has said that given the current climate it was not possible to build a single-cell jail, despite it being the ideal regime for jails.

It is understood that it will be the most expensive jail to be built in the State and each will be have its own shower and toilet facilities, which Mr Shatter says will "ensure people are dealt with in a humane way".
