Trust Launches Legal Action Against Biomass Power Plant
A legal challenge has been launched over a 10 year permit granted to a peat and biomass-fuelled power station in CO Offaly, arguing that Bord Pleanála’s decision to grant planning permission may have “acted against the national interest”.
The High Court granted leave to An Taisce for a judicial review of the permission given to Edenderry power Ltd and Bord na Móna to keep burning peat and biomass at the power station in Ballykilleen, Clonbullogue.
An Taisce argue that the wider environmental impacts of extracting peat to be burned at the plant were not properly assessed and could be contrary to EU law.

Two Investigations Underway Following Death Of Worker
Two investigations have been launched following the death of a man at the ESB Lough Ree power station in Co Longford. It is believed the man, in his late 50s, became trapped in machinery shortly before 1am. Emergency services were called to the scene and colleagues made frantic efforts to release him.

ESB To Sell Peat Burning Power Stations
Two ESB power stations in Offaly and Longford are to be sold. Workers at the stations were told of the decision this morning at meetings held at West Offaly Power at Shannonbridge and Lough Ree Power in Lanesboro, Co Longford. It is understood that the sales are expected to be completed within the next twelve months.

Sinn Fein has accused the Government and ESB of betraying staff after news two power stations in the Midlands will close. The Electricity Supply Board confirmed today that two peat-fired electricity generation plants will cease operating at the end of 2020.

An Taisce, The National Trust for Ireland, has launched judicial review proceedings in London to challenge the legality of UK Secretary of State Ed Davey's decision to grant permission to build and operate a nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in the Bristol Channel, Somerset, 150 miles from the Irish coast.

ESB No Longer Selling Power Stations
The Electricity Supply Board (ESB) has said it is no longer selling two peat-fired power stations in the midlands. In October 2012, the Irish Government requested ESB develop plans for the sale of some non-strategic generation capacity, with the objective of delivering special dividends to the Government of €400m by the end of 2014.
