Over €300m Secured For Roads
A total of €332.9 million is to be spent on regional and local roads in 2014, the Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar has announced.
In a statement about the roads package some 1,910 kms of regional and local road are to be maintained, 2,156 kms are to be strengthened, 245 low cost safety projects will be carried out, and 162 bridge rehabilitation projects will be undertaken in the coming year.
Minister Varadkar said: “I have been able to protect funding for road maintenance and repair in 2014 as maintenance must be the top priority, particularly following the recent spell of bad weather.
"Local authorities will also have more discretion than ever before about how they allocate funding under the various grant categories, which will allow them to target resources at roads damaged by the recent storms. More than €106 million is available in 2014 for works that the local authorities will have full discretion over."
The statement breaks down how the funding will be spent:
€145 million for maintenance, improvement and strengthening works;
€40 million for surface dressing;
€70 million for maintenance and strengthening works for which local authorities have complete discretion in the selection of roads;
€22.5 million for urban authorities for rehabilitation and maintenance of road and footpath pavements and urban authorities have complete discretion in the selection of projects;
€23.1 million for Specific and Strategic Regional and Local Roads Projects to meet pre-existing commitments;
€12.5 million of miscellaneous grants including Community Involvement Schemes, speed limit initiatives, bridge inspections, training;
€7.5 million for bridge rehabilitation works;
€6.1 million for Low Cost Safety Improvement Works.

Cocaine Seizure In Co. Louth

Plans To Sell Social Housing Unit With 60% Reduction 'Unacceptable'
The government's proposal to offer a 60% discount in the sale of social housing units has been described as "unacceptable" and a "move to further separate the state from housing provision and would lead to housing shortages into the future", according to Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis.

Works Will Sustain Jobs For Around 3,800 People
Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar has announced details of the €379.5 million investment programme for 2012 for regional and local roads. Minister Varadkar said the package represented an average spend of €31.6 million every month this year on regional and local roads and will sustain employment for around 3,800 people.

The Government has approved the establishment of a €200 million Local Infrastructure Fund. The fund will provide public off-site infrastructure to stimulate an increase in private housing in Dublin and in urban areas of high demand for housing.

Latest Figures Published For Household Charge Payment
Data collected overnight has shown a further 1,319 property owners have paid the €100 household charge since yesterday. Local Government Management Agency figures show that since the deadline of Mach 31 households have been registering at a rate of over 1,000 a day. The total figure now stands at 892,520 registrations or payments.
