Southwest Kerry Awaits Dark Sky Award

An area of southwest Kerry could become the first region in Ireland to receive a "dark sky reserve" award, recognising the quality of its night sky.

The 700sq km could be in line for to be awarded "gold-tier" reserve status, which would making it the first region in the northern hemisphere to receive the designation.

The International Dark-Sky Association, based in Arizone in the US, was established in 1998 to protect and raise awareness of the night sky.

The announcement of an award for Kerry is expected on Monday night.
