Taoiseach And Tánaiste Apologise To Louise O'Keeffe

The Taoiseach and the Tánaiste have issued an apology to Louise O'Keeffe.

It follows a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights that the State is liable for sexual abuse suffered by Ms O'Keeffe while she was a national school pupil.

Enda Kenny described Ms O'Keeffe as "an example of a woman of extraordinary commitment."

Ms O'Keeffe had pursued her case through the High Court, the Supreme Court and the ECHR.

Commenting on how long Ms O'Keeffe pursued the case, Mr Kenny added: "Sadly, it's one that's indicative of a long litany of cases in Ireland.

"That's why in the past we've had to deal with an exceptional number of cases that scar our memory.

"And for that reason, I just think that while this judgment is exceptionally complex and will be studied by Government, I would like to say to Louise O'Keeffe that I apologise for what happened to her in the location she was in and the horrendous experience she had to go through."
