Olympic Boxer Kenny Egan Considering Standing For Fine Gael

Olympic boxer Kenny Egan is considering standing as a Fine Gael candidate in the next local government elections.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny welcomed the news that the silver medallist is in talks with the party.

"I can confirm that the Fine Gael party are having discussions with Kenny Egan, an outstanding athlete and a great ambassador for Ireland in the boxing ring in his Olympic days," the Taoiseach said.

Adding: "It is not concluded yet but the party is talking to Ken. But I think it is a very positive development."

According to a report by the Irish Times, Mr Egan, a Clondalkin native, is interested in running for Dublin City Council in the Blanchardstown area.

The Fine Gael opposition leader, Enda Kenny, has said he expects to be the next Taoiseach. Speaking on RTÉ's currtent affairs programme This Week, Mr Kenny said his party will be the largest party in the next Dáil and the Labour Party would be their desired coalition partners.

Kenny Slams Sinn Féin Coalition Claims
Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny has rejected claims he asked if Sinn Féin would be prepared to support him as Taoiseach after the 2007 General Election.
